Furnace construction and temperature measurement in and on industrial furnaces

From small laboratory furnaces to large-scale incinerators, from coating and hardening processes to waste incineration and crystal growing: Accurate temperature measurement under extreme conditions at times is crucial. That’s where TEMPCO Sensors / RÖSSEL-Messtechnik comes in.
Backed by years of experience, we support our customers in the field of furnace construction with accurate temperature measurement.

Our thermometers and products contribute to process control, quality assurance and product control. Many furnaces are especially designed for special applications. We produce temperature sensors optimized for specific applications as a result.
This includes our entire range of measurement technology from tungsten-rhenium thermocouples with special thermowells materials such as molybdenum or quartz to the bolometer used to measure the uniform heating of flat glasses or ceramics.

We will also find the optimum solution for your system with industry-specific calibrations, individual design and our expertise in special material applications.

Selecting a temperature sensor for industrial furnaces depends primarily on the temperature range and the harshness of the environment. The three primary sensors used in the furnace and heat-treating industry are Thermocouples, RTDs, and Pyrometers.

                                 1. Thermocouples (Most Common)

Thermocouples are the industry standard for furnaces due to their wide temperature range, durability, and low cost.

  • Temperature Range: Up to \(2300°C, depending on the type.
  • Type R, S, B: Platinum-based, specialized for high-temperature, oxidizing or inert atmospheres up to 1700°C.Types:
  • Type K or N :The most common, ideal for general furnace use up to 1250 °C
  • Protection Tubes: In harsh or corrosive furnace environments,       thermocouples are typically encased in ceramic or metal protection tubes (e.g.,Inconel or Alumina etc).

                                   2. Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs)

RTDs determine temperature by measuring the resistance of a platinum element (such as the common Pt100). They provide exceptional accuracy and long-term stability but cannot withstand extremely high furnace heats.

  • Temperature Range: Usually limited to max \(600°C \(850°C.
  • Usage: Commonly deployed for process control in lower-temperature furnaces, industrial HVAC, or monitoring the cold-junction and exterior casing temperatures of high-heat furnaces.
